We are looking for a Data Engineering  Manager to join OpenClassrooms reporting directly to the VP of Business Technology - to help structure the department, define the vision and manage the team.

 
This is a new role at OpenClassrooms and the successful candidate will be confident in coming in and establishing it to add value as quickly as possible. 
The data engineering manager will be responsible for scaling the data function in an environment based primarily on cloud-based SaaS systems and taking ownership of the data engineering matters (ETL, modelling, automation workflows) at an organizational level.

This role can be fully remote or office-based. Given most of the business activity is currently in France,  it would make sense for the successful candidate to be based there or in the UK and to be a fluent English and French speaker.


RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role, you will manage engineers who have a particular focus on data movement, data transformation and orchestration:

  • Define a strategy on how to build and maintain data pipelines from internal databases and SaaS applications
  • Own our data warehouse & ETL to ensure timely and quality data
  • Provide guidelines to document our architecture and systems as
  • Spread the DataOps philosophy in everything you do
  • Plan and execute team expansion as needed to support the company's growth and analytic needs
  • Define how to collaborate with Data Analysts to drive efficiencies for their work
  • Define how to collaborate with other functions to ensure data needs are addressed


COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • 5+ years as data engineer & 2+ years managing a data team
  • Experience with a high growth company using on-premise tools and on-demand (SaaS) transactional systems.
  • Ability to conduct requirement analysis, create strong and trustful connexion with stakeholders
  • Ability to define processes & goals 
  • People-oriented (#care) 
  • Knowledge of and experience with data-related Python packages and code
  • Demonstrably deep understanding of SQL and analytical data warehouses (Redshift preferred)
  • Hands-on experience implementing ETL (or ELT) best practices at scale.
  • Hands-on experience with data pipeline tools (Airflow, dbt)
  • Strong data modelling skills and familiarity with the Kimball methodology.
  • (ideally) Experience with Salesforce, Zuora, Zendesk as data sources and consuming data from SaaS application APIs.
  • Constantly improve product quality, security, and performance
  • Desire to continually keep up with advancements in data engineering practices
  • Ability to think both strategically and tactically with strong attention to detail in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with Data Privacy, Business Continuity, Information and Cyber 
  • Positive attitude, "can-do" approach, team-player and decisive activity leader
  • Excellent organisation skills - the ability to plan and organise work so that it is efficient and effective 
  • Fluent English and French communication skills, both written and verbal (C1 in both languages)
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and constantly evolving environment

 

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

  • Relevant professional experience with proven ability to manage large and complicated projects with experience leading cross-functional projects and teams, driving results 
  • Experience with infrastructure as code 
  • Experience managing a high traffic website
  • Experience creating a new function from scratch

HIRING PROCESS

The journey starts with a phone interview with XXX (HR team member) (30 minutes).

For the 1st round of interviews we plan face to face meetings with:

  • Jonathan Lefebvre (Tech Director), (30 minutes)
  • XXX, (HR Team Member) (1 hour)

For the 2nd round of interviews, you plan to:

  • Take a technical assessment (business or study case,…) to be done at home or at the office (2 hours)
  • Take an English or French test to be done at home (at your own pace)

For the final round, we plan face to face with:

  • 2 or 4 peers from teams across the organization to discuss the Culture and Values at OpenClassrooms (2 hours)
  • Meet with CTO (1 hour)
